Jim Walker, CPF

has been framing art works professionally for 13 years. As a co-owner of Walkerworks Picture Framing he has produced many excellent designs for a wide array of unique and challenging works of art. His post secondary education was in the visual arts with a specialization in Photography. Jim has been a continuing education instructor for the O.C.D.S.B. for 12 years with courses in Matting/Framing and Photography.

   

Joni Newman

is a quilter and fibre artist living in Munster, Ontario. She has been teaching fibre techniques to adults and children for ten years. Rob Hinchley, AOCA

is a painter and mixed media artist living in Arnprior Ontario. He has vast experience with painting and is a graduate of the Ontario College of Art. Rob shares his passion for painting with a relaxed creative teaching approach. In 2007 he was awarded the instructor of the year honor at the Ottawa School of Art.

Description: Students explore surface colouring with water based paints on fabric. Colour mixing and application are combined with techniques to texturize fabrices for use in other pieces. Using a visual approach based on the "SkyDyes" painting method, students are encouraged to experiment and learn through making sample pieces for later use. This is a course for paint artists who want to expand into fibre or quilters and fibre artists who want to learn painting techniques.

Level: Beginner to Intermediate workshop class

Price: $75 + GST

Max. Number of Participants: 8

Supply Fee: $20 (payable to instructor at 1st class)

Materials:

  • Pre-washed white or unbleached 100% cottom (tight weave, similar to broadcloth)
    OR "Ready to Dye" 100% cotton
    Fabric should be cut into "fat quarters", approximately 20" x 20"
     
  • Large tray OR plastic lined clean rectangular pizza box OR large piece of foam core to paint on/in.

*The supply fee includes Setacolor Transparent and Pearlescent Paints in a variety of colours and dilutions. It also includes brushes, sponges and other application and texturing tools for use at the workshop.

Description: Students will be shown techniques for printing pictures and text on fabric using a computer and printer as well as exploring other methods for transferring printed graphics to fabric.

Workshop Includes:

  • A comparison of Pre-treated products
  • Various techniques for pre-treating your own fabric

  • The Pro’s and Con’s of each method

Topics include cutting and assembling the mat package, mat and frame co-ordination, colour concepts, archival preservation, frame styles, etc. Using art prints supplied, each student will cut their own mat using home-based equipment, and learn how to hinge their artwork to a backing.

Students will cut a double mat, hinge their artwork and fit their mat pack into a frame of their choosing to go home with a finished piece. Description: Learn how make wooden picture frames using framing tools created for the home hobbyist. Using Logan Graphic's Pro-Saw, Precision Sander & Studio Joiner and various other hand tools, Jim will demonstrate and guide you through the various steps involved in making a picture frame with hand tools. You will learn accurate measuring, cutting, sanding, joining and filling techniques. Practice your new skills using shop supplied picture frame moulding and go home with the basic skills to continue making frames at home ! This 2 week workshop is restricted to 2 students and will run Saturday afternoons while the shop is open.

Description: Be guided through a complete framing project from design, mat cutting, frame cutting and joining to completion. Students will bring in an artwork or photograph, no larger than 8 x 10, to design, mat and frame under Jim's guidance. Students will be using the shop's tools. Moulding, U.V. glass cut to size, mats blanks and backing will be supplied.

Participants in Rob Hinchley's painting classes will need to purchase their materials prior to the first class. Artmad in Stittsville has all of these supplies and will give you a 10% discount. Any questions concerning your materials will be addressed on the first night of class, please bring what you can to the first night.

Participants taking the beginner picture framing mat cutting courses will be using the shop's Logan 301-S Compact Mat Cutters. Students taking frame cutting courses will need to either purchase their tools (available through Walkerworks) or bring their own. All picture framing tools and supplies can be purchased in advance of your class at Walkerworks.

To register for a class, we will require a 50% deposit. You may do so either by coming by in person to the shop during regular shop hours, or by calling us at 613-831-2879 with your credit card number. In this case, an e-voice will be sent to your email address confirming your registration. Balance will be payable on your first night of class. Any course supply fees will be payable directly to the instructor in cash during class.

Our workshop classes are small, however, we need a minimum enrollment to run a class. If we cancel your class, you will be refunded in full. If for any reason you need to withdraw from a class that you have enrolled in, we will happily refund your deposit in full, up to 7 days before the class is scheduled to commence. If you withdraw after a class has commenced, we will pro-rate your refund.
